THE RESTAURANT

L’Aigle d’Or is found just outside the town centre. The restaurant is a five minute walk from the château of Azay le Rideau which is 25km from Tours, and 20km from Chinon. The restaurant is in a 19th century building which has a long history of hospitality. It was previously an inn then became a successful restaurant run by Jean Luc et Ghislaine Fevre for 33 years.  At the end of 2019 Simon Desiles and Eleanor Thomas took over running the restaurant and the next chapter in the history of l’Aigle d’Or began.

The restaurant has a relaxing ambiance with a simple but elegant approach to dining.  During the summer weather it is possible to dine outdoors in the walled garden full of flowers and partly shaded by a mulberry tree.  Simon and Eleanor hope that their guests will take away good memories of their experience at L’Aigle D’Or food but even better that they might think of it as a special place with, perhaps, a few surprises.

THE CHEF

The chef, Simon Desiles has worked in many different regions of France with some of the best Chefs in the country including Michel Gerard, Regis et Jacques Marcon, Benoit Vidal and Vincent Arnould. Under such expert tutelage his sense and skill with french cuisine has developed and matured. He has created his own vision of french food, always thinking of the day he would have his own restaurant.

THE ETHOS

At L’Aigle D’Or the use of high quality ingredients sourced from the local area is essential. It is our view that we have a responsibility to work with the local producers to support sustainable agriculture that also has respect for the environment. We would like you to experience food based on the Gastronomic French Tradition updated for modern times and attitudes. The menu will be seasonal and if you visit us more than we hope that each visit will be a little different to the last.

WHO ARE WE ?

He has created his own vision of french food, always thinking of the day he would have his own restaurant.

Eleanor Thomas, originally from Southern England and Maitresse of the restaurant, trained as a pastry chef in the restaurant and boutique sectors. At L’Aigle D’Or she is primarily restaurant manager and enjoys using her formidable organisational skills ; being from a large family she finds that she has adapted well to this role. She does however like to practice her patisserie skills by helping out at times in the kitchen.

Since they met in the Alps Simon and Eleanor have been looking for a way that they can make their shared passion for serving fine food a reality. Destiny brought the young couple to the Loire Valley close to the Sarthe region where Simon grew up. The region offers them much to discover and experiment with as the Loire valley has a long and illustrious gastronomic heritage and a formidable reputation for good wine.
